Want somewhere that is cheap and quick but still have quality Mexican food? Then Tacos Roy is a great option! They have posole, tostadas, quesadillas, tacos, (sometimes) flan, and Oaxacas's famous tlayudas. They also have horchata and then the normal drinks as well, this restaurant is also a chain in Oaxaca. There is also a big television in the restaurant that has Netlfix and there is always a movie going on. The staff are really friendly and quick, also if you go often then they will know you and your order so they will ask if you want the regular.
This place is much more on the fancier side of Oaxaca cuisine. This was the first place that the cohort of the 2018 group went to. The staff was very kind since they soon found out we never had Oaxaca cuisine, they recommended food options for beginners and the atmosphere was very calm and fancy. The decorations in the restaurant definitely captured your eyes. This place is also right next to Santo Domingo which is the beautiful church. Great place to start because you can go and explore a little of the center! The prices of this restaurant were a bit pricey but these plates could be shared among two students. Food was amazing!
Want some Japanese food but don't know where to go? This is a cute little place that has great food and tastes somewhat accurate to what we have here. Prices here are in the intermediate price range. Their menu has famous anime characters and they have drinks that relate to the anime! They have sushi, noodles, and they even have a vegetarian option. This restaurant is in the centro area close to Santo Domingo, this walk to the restaurant is really nice since you are walking by streets that are full of paintings on the wall!
La Matatena Pizzeria
Wood fired pizza, and probably the one place in Oaxaca that has gluten free pizza (with vegan options, too!) AND gluten free cupcakes. Also, the Sangria there is super good. (Becca McInally) If you like kids, this place is great because the owners daughter is always playing around the restaurant. Also, since the main door is always open they have BLANKETS if you get cold!
Gluten free pizza (with vegan options, too!)
Address: Calle de Manuel García Vigil 212, RUTA INDEPENDENCIA, Centro, 68000 Oaxaca de Juárez, Oax., Mexico
A little organic market selling textiles, wares, and fresh food. Amazing, and shockingly, you'll find large food portions for a bargain
Address: Calle Macedonio Alcalá 806, RUTA INDEPENDENCIA, Centro, 68000 Oaxaca de Juárez, Oax., Mexico
Tlayudas el Negro
Massive tlayudas, smoked right in the middle of the restaurant with a big vent in the ceiling. Really cheap. Sometimes they played music. Only open at daytime, though.
Open later than the other place. Fantastic. Tiny space. Fast.
